About the breed
What is now the Icelandic breed are the descendants of Norwegian sheep brought to Iceland when it was first settled over a thousand years ago. The sheep are extremely hardy, able to thrive in the island's rugged landscapes. They are dual coated, meaning they produce an inner layer of soft fleece as well as a protective outer coat made of thicker, longer hairs. While it is possible to separate the fleece into its two parts, the wool is at its most intriguing when the two coats are blended together, as is the case in the traditional Lopi yarns.
